Location and microphone

1Helm asks once for your location and microphone, so your helper knows what's near you and you can talk instead of type. Both are optional.

Asked once

The first time you sign in on a device (and during setup), one sheet asks Let 1Helm use your location and microphone, with Allow and Not now. Allow brings up the browser's own two questions, once, so nothing pops up in the middle of a task later. It's skipped when the browser already allows both, and not shown again on that device after Not now.

Your location

  • With location allowed, the app sends a rough location (rounded to about 1 km, never an exact address) when it opens, every 15 minutes or so while you use it, and with your messages. Your helper knows what's near you without asking "where are you?".
  • 1Helm keeps only the last one, with its town or city name, and replaces it each time. There's no history of where you've been.
  • To turn that spot into a town name, only the rounded spot (no name, account or address) goes to OpenStreetMap's free place-name service, and only when it changes.
  • For anything about your home (cleaning, repairs, deliveries), your helper uses the home address in your Notebook; for "near me", where you are right now. Without location, it goes by your Notebook home, then your time zone, and can show a one-tap Share my location button when it needs it.

Your microphone

The microphone is used only when you tap it: for dictation in the message box, or when you start Live notes. There's no background listening, and your helper can't turn the microphone on. Dictated words go in the box for you to check; the recording is turned into text and isn't stored.

Your controls

Settings → Location & mic shows whether each is on in this browser. For location: Turn on, a switch for sharing it with your helper, the town it last saw and when, Update now and Forget my location. For the microphone: Turn on. The browser decides the permission itself, so to block one completely, change it in the browser's site settings.
