Lesson 2 of 8 · 5 min read

Tell it how you work

Your helper learns on its own, but a few minutes of telling it how you like things done pays off for months.

Say it once

Start any task with how you like it done. Your helper saves anything that sounds like a rule.

When you email clients, keep it under five sentences, open with "Hi friend!" and sign off "— M".

Correct it like a person

If it gets something wrong, say so the way you would to a new assistant: "No, we bill at milestones, not monthly." It fixes the work and saves the correction. You don't need special wording.

Check the Notebook

Open Notebook in the channel's side panel (on a phone, it's one of the tiles in the menu). Notes are grouped into About you, How you like things, People, Accounts & places and Right now. It's plain words, so you can add, edit or delete anything.

Let it interview you

Say "interview me about the move" and your helper shows a few tap-to-answer questions right in the chat. Your answers go back to it in one message.

It keeps learning between chats

About an hour after you talk in a channel, quiet upkeep adds the lasting things you said to memory, and once a day it updates the people you mention in Contacts. Every night it writes a short pinned note in General's Notebook, "How to work with" you. Each item has to match your own words, and none of it ever messages you. Edit the nightly note and it's yours from then on. See Background memory.

Save how you like it done

When a job comes out just right, say "save this as a skill". Your helper keeps the way it did it as one of that channel's skills, and reads it before doing that kind of job again. See Skills.

Or have it forget

Say "forget that". Your helper shows what it holds about it and, after your yes, deletes it and stops learning it again.

Tip: the most useful notes are the boring ones: where things live, who people are, what "done" means to you.
Try it

Tell your helper one rule about how you like a thing done, then open its Notebook and find it.
